Marlyn Carrillo is a first-generation woman with extensive experience as a press and digital media specialist. She currently serves as the Marketing Director for Athenian Group, where she leads brand development, messaging, and digital marketing strategies to drive enterprise growth and support organizational transformation.
Marlyn began her career as a journalist covering El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, and Las Cruces, NM, via Telemundo El Paso and KRUX 91.5 FM. She later managed communication platforms and media strategy as Communications Director for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. Recently, she was appointed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria to serve on the Commission on the Status of Women.
Passionate about amplifying voices and creating spaces for women, Marlyn founded a women's art collective with members in over 20 cities. She is deeply invested in civil rights, serving as an active member of women's and immigration advocacy groups.
Before her role at the Chamber, Marlyn served as Press Secretary for the Office of Congressmember Juan Vargas. In this capacity, she spearheaded digital strategy, overseeing the office’s website, social media platforms, and content creation for monthly podcasts, webinars, and virtual events. Her contributions also included producing office branding materials, weekly newsletters, COVID-19 resource packages, press releases, statements, English-Spanish translations, and talking points.
Her commitment to building quality public services for immigrant and female-identifying communities also led her to create the Latinx Membership Specialist role at Girl Scouts San Diego. Within this role, she forged strong relationships in diverse and underrepresented communities, reflected in the hundreds of new volunteers and community partners she recruited and trained. Her work made a national impact, with a curriculum on Latinx community engagement and digital strategy reaching over 100 Girl Scout USA councils.
Marlyn also pioneered national initiatives for social media, training curriculum, and development for GSUSA staff and volunteers, bridging the gap between virtual and on-the-ground recruiting efforts.
